At Slussen you can board the former steamship Gustafsberg II for a round trip of Havstens Fjord and land at Lyckorna, on the mainland, where you can spend the day admiring the magnificent summer villas, or by visiting the Mussel Bar at Klocktornet or Villa Sjötorp for lunch.
The scenery on the east side of the island Orust rewards exploration. The lake system comprising Assmunderödvatten, Grindsbyvattnet and Kollungerödvatten is just made for cycle tours. The road winds prettily through woods, along the lakes and by waterside meadows. You can stop at the charming former mill. Ålgårds Kvarn, which occasionally has a pop-up café and cultural events. Watch out for the beavers in the lake!
Around and about locally
Slussen is a pretty little village nestled in the inlet of a sheltered bay. An unparalleled tranquillity reigns here year round. If you just want to go for a walk and enjoy the view and the fresh air there are plenty of lovely paths.
If you are a birdwatcher, or just like a view, there’s an observation tower overlooking Lake Runnsvattnet just past Slussen centre, where you can appreciate the beautiful scenery & if you’re lucky spot some rare birds too
Slussen is also an excellent location for sea trout fishing. During spring the fish travel up the little river that links the sea with the island’s eastern lake system. When the new fishing season opens on 1st April Slussen becomes a very lively place!
Down in the village is a kiosk and a café, Slussens Skafferi, with lovely cappuccino, fresh baguettes and home made cake. A short walk from there is Antikt & Nostalgi (Antiques and Curiosities), with a small but select range and knowledgeable owners.
Not far from Slussens centre, on the road to Höggeröd, you will find a beautiful view over the bay. Pass the pretty Rudolf Steiner School by the beach, and carry on up the road to Höggeröd where you will find Anns Keramikbod (Pottery Studio). Here you can buy lovely pottery direct from the maker.
There’s a lot to explore on our beautiful island. Many locations are less than an hour away from Slussen, such as Stillingsön, halfway between Svanesund and Slussen. This pretty little seaside resort is full of immaculately well kept summerhouses dating from the beginning of the last century, decorated in white and yellow in the traditional fashion. The west side of the island is a tourism hot spot with lots of attractive well known destinations. Mollösund is a carefully preserved traditional fishing village, well worth a day trip. You can take the ferry from Tuvesvik to the islands of Käringön and Gullholmen, both are picturesque classically Bohuslän style surroundings. Orust Blommor on the way to Ellös has a fantastic display of stately geraniums, and make sure you fit in a visit to Tavlebord farm shop and cafe, which sells local produce and produces their own honey.
The Pilgrim’s Trail on Orust leads between the churches on the island. The paths take you through beautiful countryside, are easy to walk and well signposted. The trail consists of eight sections, covering eighty kilometres in total. The nearest stretch starts by Torp Church about 2km from Slussen. You’ll find Pilgrim’s Trail maps in reception, and more information here:
While staying at Slussen you have to visit the Nordic Watercolour Museum (Nordiska Akvarellmuséet) on Tjörn, which is the most popular attraction in the whole of Southern Bohuslän. As well as the varied exhibitions, the environment in and around the Museum is well worth a day trip. Also fun to visit while you are on Tjörn is the Iron Age burial ground at Pilane, which in addition is now home to an artistically acclaimed outdoor sculpture park with a different exhibition every summer.
